Birthday : 1/7/1956
Education Background: B.A. History, Union University; M.Div. and Ph.D., Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary
Ministry Background: Youth Minister for 7 years, Pastor 6 years; IMB Missionary to Zimbabwe, Africa for 6 years; seminary professor for 16 years; Pastor at Immanuel since July 2000
I was called to IBC on: July 2000
My Family Details: Married to Iva for 30+ years; we have 3 children: Jennifer (34); Jonathan (32); and Steven (26), who is married to Anna and studying at SBTS
My Role at IBC: Pastor (general of an all-volunteer army!); shepherd whose job is to feed, lead, and defend the flock; pastoral role is defined in Acts 6:4
Personal Story: Grew up in a Baptist church, made many decisions, but only converted at 19. Went back to school, served as pastor in Arkansas, served as a missionary in Zimbabwe (and loved it!), and now serve the greatest church on earth! I also teach adjunctly for Union University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Favorite Book of the Bible: Generally, the one I’m reading on the day, but I enjoy the Gospel of Mark, Colossians, and Hebrews
Recent Books I’ve Enjoyed: The Prodigal God by Tim Keller; The Missionary Call by David Sills; One Thing You Can’t Do in Heaven by Mark Cahill
Books I’m Reading Now: The Reason for God by Tim Keller; Paul the Missionary by Eckhard Schnabel
Most Fulfilling Aspect of my Ministry at IBC: The joy of preaching the Word of God and seeing people grow in Christlikeness as they fall in love with God’s Word, develop a passion for souls, and give themselves and their resources sacrificially to reach the world for Christ
Places of Service Available in my Ministry: I will be leading a group this summer for men who want to grow in their faith; I covet people who pray daily, and my prayer is that God will raise up laborers in prayer
Spiritual Gifts: I have the gift of service that works itself out through the pastor/teacher gift of Eph. 4:11
I Hope Heaven Includes: Fellowship with God’s saints, fellowship around the King’s table, and fellowship with the King Himself
The Smartest Thing I’ve Ever Done: Marry Iva; she’s kept me focused and motivated me to grow in my faith
How You Can Pray for Me: Pray that I will keep true to the Lord, live for the Day, and honor the Lord Jesus in every message I preach. I want to finish well.
